European Project Freshbox starts in Zaragoza, Spain


An intelligent container will be developed to reduce food waste, extend fresh produce shelf life and reduce fuel/energy consumption.
The team is formed by six entities (four Spanish, one Irish and 1 German).
Project budget is 1.957.435€ and will last three years.

Today starts at AITIIP facilities Freshbox Project, coordinated by Scientific Technological Park Foundation “Aula Dei”, cofinanced by Life+ program.

Freshbox Project will develop an intelligent and active container for vegetables transportation. This container will allow extending fresh products shelf life, reducing its damages (and wastes) and also fuel consumption.

The project aims to improve the sustainability of the distribution of fresh produce to create a more competitive sector that can offer better products to the final consumer.

Fresh Box container characteristics:

Active & smart container that stores & transports each type of fresh produce in the ideal conditions of respiration rate.
Monitored with an innovative Integrated Sensor Kit to check the main environmental features in the container and allow traceability.
Lightweight, manufactured with a technology that saves energy and made of innovative recyclable material.
Can transport fresh produce harvested at a higher maturity stage: consumers will be able to enjoy fruits and vegetables with better features.

The partnership:

PCTAD Scientific Technological Park Foundation Aula Dei. Project coordinator, they will carry out life cycle analysis and also vegetables requirements and quality at origin and destination.

AITIIP Technological Centre will design and develop container and active additives.

Lafuente Tomey producer and distributor of vegetables. They will specify vegetables requirements and promote Project results among the vegetable producers. La Muela (Spain).

Imar ICT entity who will design monitoring control system. Tralee (Ireland).

Kölla Distributor of fresh vegetables. Kaarst (Germany).

Transfer Consultancy, Barcelona (Spain) – Dissemination of Project results.

Life+ programme:
